Worried about a relative that had surgery....

by Worried

I am hoping someone can offer some assistance.

A relative of mine had cataract surgery last week and since the day of the operation (it will be a week tomorrow) he has not been able to open his eye... Has ANYONE ever had this happen before?

Of course, the doctor that did the surgery advised that he just "put warm compresses on it" but offered no other insight into this problem that is quite distressing to our family. NO ONE has ever heard of this happening before!

Dear Worried,

It sounds quite unusual not to be able to open the eye after cataract surgery. Sometimes, the eye may be irritated after surgery, and so the eyelids tend to want to close as a protective reflex. Also, on the rare occasion, the muscle that lifts the eyelid may be affected during surgery, thus resulting in the eye being closed.

Without examining the eye or knowing the history, it will be difficult to know for sure just what is happening. My suggestion is to consult the cataract surgeon at some point to make sure that the eye is settling the way it should after surgery.

Good luck!

Kind regards,
Brian
